How Long Does It Take to Build a Sukkah?
Hey there, sukkah builders! Wondering how much time to block off for building your sukkah this year? You’re not alone! Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, let’s chat about realistic timeframes so you can plan your pre-holiday schedule without stress.
What Affects Your Building Time?
The Type of Sukkah You Choose
Different sukkahs come with different time commitments:
- Pre-fab Sukkahs: Our popular Tubular Sukkah Kits can be up in just 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the size. Perfect if you’re short on time or new to this whole sukkah thing!
- Wood Sukkahs: Our Wood-Frame Sukkah Kits are still very easy to build, but take a bit more time than a metal sukkah—a couple of hours should do the trick the first time, and after that the time can be cut in half when all the brackets and screws are already in place.
- Home-made Sukkahs: Planning to build from scratch, without one of our klutz-proof sukkah kits? Set aside 1-2 days for your DIY project, depending on your level of expertise (our sukkah kits require no expertise, though!).
Your Sukkah-Building Crew
Building is always more fun (and faster!) with friends and family:
- Going solo? Plan for a little extra time, and some finagling with the larger pieces.
- Got a helper? You’ll finish about 30% faster.
- Gathered a crew? You might cut your time in half!
Your Sukkah Size
Whether your trying to fit just your spouse, or the whole neighborhood, the size of the sukkah you’re building will make a big difference:
- Smaller sukkahs like the 6×8 or 8×8 should only take about 15-30 minutes if you’re using one of our convenient metal sukkah kits and bamboo s’chach mats.
- Slightly larger family-sized sukkahs like the 8×12, 8×16 and 12×12 sukkahs will take a little bit longer, around 30-45 minutes.
- As you get into sukkahs for larger gatherings like a 12×16 or 12×24, plan on an hour to hour and a half.
- If you’re building a BIG sukkah for your school or shul like a 24×24, 36×36, or even bigger, get a crew of helpers together and plan on a couple of hours for setup—these are giant sukkahs for a huge, fun gathering!
Time-Saving Tips
- Read the Instructions First: Read the whole instruction manual before you get started to familiarize yourself with the structure and assembly. Our klutz-proof sukkah instructions make it easy!
- Grab the Right Tools—Or No Tools! Our metal sukkahs require no tools at all except a step stool/ladder, whereas our wood-frame sukkah kits also require a power screwdriver, and your own DIY construction may require much more like saws, clamps, etc.
- Consider the Weather: Don’t try to set up your sukkah in a storm! And be sure to check out our blog post on How to Protect Your Sukkah from the Wind for some important tips.
When Should You Start?
While traditionally many begin after Yom Kippur, here’s what we recommend:
- Old pros: 2-3 days before the holiday
- Newbies: Give yourself 4-5 days, just to be safe
- Super busy families: Whenever you find the time! With our klutz-proof sukkahs, you can put up a sukkah in no time at all.

Building your sukkah isn’t just about checking off a task – it’s about creating memories and fulfilling the mitzvot of Sukkot! Many of our customers tell us sukkah-building day becomes a cherished family tradition.
