Since 5757 (1996) our Klutz-Proof Sukkah kits have enabled thousands of families, congregations, and schools to build sturdy, affordable sukkot in a variety of sizes and styles. Our sukkahs require no construction skill or expertise and are designed with the novice builder in mind.
For almost 30 years our small, family-owned business has operated under some basic guiding principles: treat people fairly, be kind, do good in the world, and don’t cut corners.
We could get cheaper parts for our sukkahs, that wouldn’t last as long. We could switch from high-quality fabric wall material that lasts for 15+ years to cheap, plasticky walls like you see on most sukkah kits out there. We could get flimsier steel fittings that eventually bend in the wind, necessitating frequent replacement. We could opt to not include the roof poles for holding up your s’chach because figuring out the shipping on them is challenging, forcing our customers to make a last-minute trip to the hardware store to finish their sukkah setup. Heck, we could buy any of the sukkahs that are available on the wholesale market from overseas manufacturers, import them, and resell them at a big markup. Unfortunately, this is what most sukkah companies do.
None of this is who we are. All of our products are designed, created, and assembled by us, right here in the good old U.S.A. When you buy a sukkah from us, we feel that we’re making a few promises to you: it will be as affordable as we can reasonably make such a high quality product, we will ship it out quickly, we’ll be available and happy to answer your questions and provide support before, during, and after your purchase, your sukkah will be easy to build, and it will last for many, many years to come. We’re human though, too, so in the unlikely event that something does go wrong, we will always make it right.
We’ve been here for almost 30 years, leading the sukkah market not by cutting corners and taking our customers for granted, but by creating a reputation as a reliable, trustworthy, and friendly partner in your Sukkot celebration. We won’t ever do it any differently.
Back in the late 80’s Rabbi Steve Sager of Beth El Synagogue in Durham, NC asked Steve Herman, the founder of The Sukkah Project®, if he would design a simple do-it-yourself sukkah kit for members of the community who wished to have a sukkah but had no experience with building things. The wood-frame sukkah kit he came up with proved extremely popular with the local community, and soon requests were also coming in from far off places.
Recognizing that a widespread need existed for a good affordable sukkah, Steve and his wife Judith launched a business selling sukkahs nationwide through mail order and eventually the Internet. What started as a side project to help the local Jewish community has evolved into a full time family business offering a full catalog of unique items for the observance of Sukkot.
In 2015, Steve’s nephew Abram took over operation of The Sukkah Project®, ensuring that it will stay in the family and continue to serve the needs of our customers for many years to come. We are based in beautiful western Colorado; send us an email if you’d like to stop by sometime!
